Animal testing – unavoidable, but in need of explanation. Together, we discuss perspectives from research, politics, and communication in dealing with the “animal testing dilemma.” An event organized by Charité in collaboration with the European Animal Research Association (EARA), the initiative “Tierversuche verstehen” and the Max Delbrück Center.
Animal testing remains an indispensable tool in biomedical research, including the development of therapies for complex widespread diseases such as cancer or Alzheimer's, or for rare diseases. However, social expectations, political changes, and new scientific methods such as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) call for critical reflection on how this issue is handled—not only in the laboratory, but also in public communication.
As part of Berlin Science Week, we are therefore hosting a panel discussion aimed at decision-makers in healthcare, science policy, and the media, as well as anyone interested in how society deals with the “animal testing dilemma.” The aim is to find answers to the question: How can we achieve a responsible, forward-looking, and communication-conscious approach to currently unavoidable animal testing in Germany?
The event will be held in German.
