ZEBET (Central Office for the Collection and Evaluation of Alternative and Complementary Methods to Animal Testing) at the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment advises regulatory authorities on alternative methods to animal testing (pursuant to Section 46 of the Animal Testing Regulation). Based on the experience of recent years, this presentation will outline how the advisory process works in practice, which aspects are typically reviewed, and what authorities can expect from this support. In addition, current developments in the scientific landscape will be highlighted, such as the availability of innovative in vitro models like organoid systems, which are increasingly influencing the evaluation of animal testing applications. Another focus of the presentation is on frequently observed challenges in applications as well as on ways to improve the application process. The goal is to foster a better understanding of the advisory process, provide transparency regarding the Bf3R’s working methods, and offer impetus for a high-quality search for alternative methods.
