3R Curriculum on Animal Ethics and the 3R Principle

Face-to-face event
The course is usually offered in the spring and fall.
The course language is English.

Excerpt from the website: “This 1-week PhD course introduces along the 3Rs principles of “Replacement, Reduction and Refinement” the current developments in this field."

This course provides an overview of innovative research approaches and measures for the welfare of laboratory animals and discusses ethical aspects. The latter will take place on the first day of the course, which can also be taken separately.

In lectures and hands-on sessions, (mainly) Charité research groups present innovative methods such as 3D (bio-)printing, organoids or in silico modelling and how these could contribute to minimize animal use. Moreover, in interactive seminars we discuss ethical aspects how animal welfare in biomedical research can be improved. The courses are held in English, since they are aimed at international doctoral students affiliated to any university.”

National and international doctoral students from all Berlin universities can participate.
Workload 1-week: 2.5 ECTS-CP
Workload 1st day: 0.4 ECTS-CP

Online Seminar: Alternatives to animal use in research and education – Refine, Reduce & Replace

Excerpt from the website:“The seminar series provides students and scientists with a wide-ranging overview of the broad spectrum of scientific topics in the field of the 3Rs. A top-class field of 17 speakers is enlisted for this year’s seminar, sharing their 3R related work on eight different days. Participation is free of charge, but registration is required. You can register either for the entire lecture series or just for individual dates."

About: The Institute of Animal Welfare, Animal Behavior and Laboratory Animal Science (FU Berlin)
The Institute of Animal Welfare, Animal Behavior and Laboratory Animal Science is involved in various cooperations and third-party funded projects, organizes lectures on animal welfare, animal behavior and laboratory animal science and covers postgraduate specialization in animal welfare and laboratory animal science.

The goal of the Einstein Center 3R (EC3R) is to promote the trustworthiness of 3R research in science and the public. As a strong biomedical research location with its proximity to key stakeholders, Berlin offers ideal conditions for comprehensively pursuing the objective of implementing the 3Rs.

About: BB3R
The Berlin-Brandenburg research platform BB3R supports (junior) scientists in the development, networking and implementation of new 3R methods. During the BB3R Graduate Program, PhD students specifically focus on the 3R principles, therefore qualifying them in the field of laboratory animal science, animal welfare law and ethical aspects.

About: Research Facilities for Experimental Medicine of the Charité (FEM)
The FEM are a central institution of the faculty of the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin in the field of biomedical research when animals are to be used for scientific purposes. Their field of activity includes, among other things, the practical implementation of the legally enshrined animal protection and animal experimental education, training and further education.

Summer Schools

Oxford Berlin Summer School on Open and Responsible Research in the Life Sciences

Face-to-face event
The course is usually offered in summer. 
The course language is English.

Excerpt from the website: “[…] we offer a five-day summer school to guide early career researchers (PhD students and postdocs) towards an open, transparent, and reproducible research workflow. This year a special focus lies on ethics of animal experiments and the 3R principles (reduce, refine, replace).”

The Summer School is free of charge. A limited number of travel stipends particularly for participants from low and middle income countries (800 €), North America (750 €), and Europe (300 €) can be granted.

About: Deutsches Zentrum zum Schutz von Versuchstieren (Bf3R)
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) performs the task of Bf3R and coordinates nationwide the restriction of animal experiments to an indispensable level and the provision of the best possible protection for laboratory animals.

Dahlem Research School (DRS) is the center for young researchers at Freie Universität Berlin. The DRS coordinates a wide range of doctoral programs and provides training for doctoral and postdoctoral students.

Statistics Courses (SPSS and R)

Face-to-face event

The course language is German.

Excerpt from the website: "Training courses in Statistics - The institute's training courses are offered under the umbrella of fu:stat and addressed to staff members and doctoral students of the department veterinary medicine and other departments.” 

During the course, the basics of data analysis will be presented using veterinary studies as examples and applied practically in small groups in the statistical program SPSS or R. The course will also discuss which results of statistical analyses should be reported in dissertations and journal articles.

ForPhD students and staff of all universities. Free of charge for participants of the FB Veterinary Medicine, 80 € for students, 160 € for employees. Please note: If demand is too high, participants of the FU Berlin will be given priority.
