Public discussion about animal research has been highly polarised for many years. Hence, we as a scientific community have a special responsibility and thus, we must commit to promote animal welfare, research quality, staff wellbeing and transparency with the upmost priority in the sense of a living culture of care. Further, valid preclinical studies are not only elementary for the ethical consideration of animal experiments, but also for the ethical justifiability of clinical studies in humans.
