For the second time, Charité has been awarded the “Exemplary Communication in Animal Research” seal of approval. The focus of this renewed recognition is on the memorial site “Traces in Science”—promoted by Charité 3R and initiated by FEM veterinarians—and the associated information and dialogue initiatives offered by Charité 3R, including the Germany-wide TechWeek for animal care staff and a film about laboratory animal breeding at Charité.

The seal was awarded during the anniversary event of the “Transparent Animal Testing” initiative to scientific institutions that have shown exceptional commitment to transparent and open communication regarding research involving animal testing. As early as 2023, Charité received the award for a film that provides insights into its animal housing facilities.

“Traces in Science” Memorial Site

With the “Traces in Science” memorial site, Charité is bringing this topic into the public sphere. The memorial stone was unveiled on April 24, 2025 – International Laboratory Animal Day – on the Charité Mitte campus. The animal tracks depicted on the sandstone honor the animals used to advance science. At the same time, the site invites employees, patients, and visitors to reflect on the importance of animal research for medicine and our responsibility toward animals.

TechWeek for Animal Caregivers
TechWeek, established at Charité, originated in 2024 as part of a “Culture of Care” project sponsored by Charité 3R. It now offers animal caregivers across Germany a diverse annual program that enables them to fulfill their continuing education requirements.

Film on the Breeding of Laboratory Animals
Released in 2025, this film focuses on the breeding of laboratory animals. It explains in an easy-to-understand way why breeding sometimes results in animals that cannot be used in experiments, and what measures help keep their numbers as low as possible.

Commitment to Discussion and Dialogue
“Part of our responsibility in research is to speak openly about animal testing—including difficult questions. With great dedication, our staff creates initiatives that make our research transparent, facilitate informed debate, and encourage dialogue. Receiving this award once again recognizes this commitment and encourages us to continue on this path with determination,” says Prof. Britta Eickholt, Associate Dean for Research at Charité.

This award recognizes open and authentic communication that addresses even the challenging aspects of animal research and makes this topic accessible to all interested parties.
