Publication | "3D bioprinting of liver models: A systematic scoping review of methods, bioinks, and reporting quality"

The article is published as a result of the fruitful collaboration between the EC3R partners. Its authors are Ahmed S.M. Ali, Dongwei Wu, Alexandra Bannach-Brown, Diyal Dhamrait, Johanna Berg, Beatrice Tolksdorf, Dajana Lichtenstein, Corinna Dressler, Albert Braeuning, Jens Kurreck and Maren Hülsemann.

The systematic scoping review offers an evidence-based overview and evaluation of the current state of research on bioprinted liver models, representing a promising and innovative technology for creating alternative organ models.

The Higlights of the article are

  • First evidence-based assessment of bioprinted liver models through a systematic scoping review.
  • Extrusion-based printing is the predominantly used method in 3D bioprinting of liver models.
  • Natural bioinks composed of protein and/or polysaccharide are most widely used in the field.
  • HepG2 hepatoma cell line is most frequently employed liver cell type, despite known limitations.
  • Identified reporting gaps enable improvements towards higher method reproducibility.
