"Pneumonia is one of the most treacherous infections. For many intensive care patients, this disease is fatal. The mortality rate for pneumonia is generally 13%. This figure has not changed for more than 70 years. In cases of acute lung failure, patients must be connected to machines that take over their breathing. More successful therapies are not yet in sight. Can research with lung organoids help improve the situation? Can mini tissue models grown from stem cells even completely replace animal testing in this area? A film crew from Understanding Animal Testing took a look around Charité – Universitätsmedizin in Berlin. The team accompanied researchers who are developing lung organoids as alternatives to animal models."
This is how the science initiative “Understanding Animal Experiments” announces its 14-minute film “How can infected organoids give hope to lung patients?”, which is well worth watching.
Prof. Stefan Hippenstiel, spokesperson for the Einstein Center 3R, and Prof. Andreas Hocke present their research on lung organoids, which, with the “replication” of pulmonary alveoli, has set out to revolutionize research into lung diseases.
