"Careful observation, data collection, analysis, and presentation of uncertainty are key to application of the scientific method and conduct of science. However, the use of animals in science often elicits strong emotions and responses from the public.
The 2-day workshop will explore the diversity of public views on care and use of animals in research and current understanding of how scientists and members of the public can communicate transparently and effectively. Invited speakers will focus on the context, applications, and value of animal research; ethical and regulatory requirements of humane animal care and use; and ways to integrate information from scientists into media for diverse public audiences. In breakout activities, attendees will simulate effective methods for communication between scientists and public audiences."
